New Volkswagen Golf R and Golf GTI

The Volkswagen Golf comes in two different, delightfully spicy flavors: The high-performance new VW Golf R and the energetic new VW Golf GTI, both in a hatchback body style. The Golf R operates with a turbo four-cylinder engine along with four-wheel drive and it has a rear-bias Drift mode that can dial up the performance factor. The Golf GTI is also equipped with a turbo-four and both models let you choose a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Here's a brief look at the new Volkswagen Golf R and the Golf GTI that are both available at Fred Beans Volkswagen of Doylestown in Doylestown, PA.

Performance in the Golf R

The Golf R is motivated by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that you can count on for 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. VW buyers in Dublin will be glad to know those numbers are higher than in the previous generation. The standard all-wheel drive system comes with a rear differential with the ability to distribute torque between left and right rear wheels to give you better handling. Fuel efficiency in the R model is rated at 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway.

The Golf R comes with selectable drive modes that include Comfort, Sport, Race, Special, Drift and Individual that you can use to custom-tailor your ride. Every model has a VW sport exhaust system, bigger front disc brakes and variable-ratio steering. The Golf R can accelerate to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds with the automatic and 4.9 seconds with the six-speed manual.

Performance in the Golf GTI

The 2024 Golf GTI is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Once again, that's an increase in both metrics compared to the previous model. The automatic version can take the GTI up to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Using the manual transmission, the Golf GTI in the S trim can make the same run in 5.8 seconds.

The base-level GTI S model comes with 18-inch wheels, a limited-slip differential and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Golf GTI with the automatic can give you 25 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on Perkasie highways.

Interior highlights in the Golf R

Inside the cabin you'll find a thick rimmed steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls that let you manage a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. The Golf R also offers bolstered front bucket seats that are covered in genuine nappa leather upholstery. Other interior features include stainless steel pedals, a carbon-look trim on the dashboard and ambient lighting with 30 colors. 

The Golf R has an infotainment system with a 10.0-inch touch screen located in the middle of the dashboard. This version of the VW Golf also comes with a Harman Kardon premium sound system with nine speakers along with Apple Carplay®, Android Auto™ and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Interior highlights in the Golf GTI

The Golf GTI is equipped with bolstered front seats highlighted by distinctive plaid inserts on the top and bottom cushions. The GTI three-spoke steering wheel has a heavily-padded rim and touch-sensitive controls. You'll find a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and either an 8.0-inch touch screen or a 10.0-inch display on higher trim levels. Like the Golf R, the GTI variation comes with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ to give you easier access to your favorite smartphone apps.
